Spring is a wonderful season! The earth is finally warming up after Winter, the birds are beginning to sing again, and flowers are blooming left and right. To celebrate this, we have two WHOLE weeks at preschool solely devoted to this amazing season. Now with the unprecedented closure occurring this week, we will be sure to wrap up our Spring activities when we return. Our fact this week is: In the North Pole, spring marks the first day of the year where the sun does not dip below the horizon for the whole day. The sun does not rise or set. It constantly skims the horizon and seems to rotate around the sky. This phenomenon is called the Midnight Sun. The sun will not set for six months straight. In the Antarctic, the sun will not rise for 6 months. Learning and DiscoveryFor our group activity, on Tuesday, we went on a nice nature walk around the school to find leaves, pine cones, and sticks. We focused on finding natural materials of different textures, like "soft," "spongy," "rough," and "bumpy." We gathered them and placed them in a bag to be used on Wednesday! On Wednesday we used the nature items we found yesterday to make a beautiful personal picture. We cut and pasted various leaves, flowers, and more on our papers to make representations of all sorts of things! There was a "messy bedroom," a "dog," a "tree house," and much more. All of the preschoolers were so creative! On Thursday we practiced our numbers. We played a number matching game at the carpet and then individually completed a Number Race by rolling a dice and then writing that number in the correct column. This gave us A LOT of practice writing our numbers, and was fun to see which number would "win" the race! Free TimeOn Tuesday, at the Art table we made spring trees with loose parts and paint. We chose a specific item to be our trunk (such as noodles, straws, or paper) and then painted on leaves with bright pastel colors (using fun paintbrushes!). They turned out so beautiful! At the Science station we each received a white rose and placed it in colored water. Our teacher said that the roses would change colors depending on the water they were in. We hypothesized what color they would turn and talked about how the water travels through the different parts of the flower. At the Language table we did an alphabet activity that involved us digging through sensory bins to find items that began with a given letter. For example, if the teacher showed us a letter "B" we had to find something that began with the letter "B" (like a bird or a bee) in our bin. It was a blast! At the Art table on Wednesday, we did a flower pot art project. We cut out pots from paper, and then made the flowers by finger painting. We always love getting our hands dirty when we do crafts! At the Language table, we did a nest themed letter activity. We had to separate eggs with pictures on them into different nests by the letter that each picture began with (for example, an egg with a picture of a cookie on it, went in the "C" nest). At the Science station we simulated the water cycle, by playing with cups with holes in the bottom (like rain) and cotton balls (as clouds that soak up water). We may have gotten a bit wet, but it was one of our favorite activities from the week. On Thursday, for our Art table activity, we made cute little bees out of construction paper. We then attached a Popsicle stick to it so it can BUZZ around! At the Language station we played animal bingo. At the Science table we did a fun activity that simulated what pollination is like. We dipped "bees" in yellow paint and then spread the paint from flower to flower. It's crazy to see how far bees travel- but we are so grateful they do! Outdoor AdventuresWe looooove warm weather!!!
