On each preschool day (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), we will be posting about our weekly theme, an activity, a book reading assignment, and some fun ideas for your time at home! Look for these each morning on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays! If you have any questions feel free to email us! We will also be including videos of our teachers reading books from time to time, so that is something to look forward to! We would also love to receive pictures of what your preschooler is doing throughout the week to share on our blog with our preschool friends! Please send pictures here: [email protected] We miss seeing you all in preschool! We hope you are finding ways to pass the time and are making great memories with your family. This week is all about insects! Here are some facts about insects that you can share with your preschooler. We will have activities this week about insects and continue to learn all about them! Do you know the difference between a bug and an insect? Insects have 3 body parts. They are the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. Insects also have 6 legs and they all lay eggs. A few insects you may recognize are: bees, caterpillars, ants, flies, beetles, butterflies, earwigs, crickets, mantis, and fireflies. Daily Activity - Creating your journalEach preschool day we will be posting a daily activity that relates to our weekly theme. The activity will be done in your preschool journal, or there will be a follow-up to the activity to complete in your journal. Since today is our first day, our daily activity is to find and personalize your preschool journal! You can use an old spiral notebook (tear out used pages), a composition notebook, or you can even staple together a stack of paper to use. The first entry in the journal for today will be, "What is your favorite part of preschool?" Parents can write "word for word" what your preschooler says, and they can add a drawing of their idea. Daily Book JournalReading is important to our learning, and we want our preschoolers to keep reading! Three times a week, help your preschooler to pick out a book and read it together. Then, using the journal decorated for our daily activity, help your preschooler to create a journal entry using any of these same options from our book bag job.

Spring is a wonderful season! The earth is finally warming up after Winter, the birds are beginning to sing again, and flowers are blooming left and right. To celebrate this, we have two WHOLE weeks at preschool solely devoted to this amazing season. Now with the unprecedented closure occurring this week, we will be sure to wrap up our Spring activities when we return. Our fact this week is: In the North Pole, spring marks the first day of the year where the sun does not dip below the horizon for the whole day. The sun does not rise or set. It constantly skims the horizon and seems to rotate around the sky. This phenomenon is called the Midnight Sun. The sun will not set for six months straight. In the Antarctic, the sun will not rise for 6 months. Learning and DiscoveryFor our group activity, on Tuesday, we went on a nice nature walk around the school to find leaves, pine cones, and sticks. We focused on finding natural materials of different textures, like "soft," "spongy," "rough," and "bumpy." We gathered them and placed them in a bag to be used on Wednesday! On Wednesday we used the nature items we found yesterday to make a beautiful personal picture. We cut and pasted various leaves, flowers, and more on our papers to make representations of all sorts of things! There was a "messy bedroom," a "dog," a "tree house," and much more. All of the preschoolers were so creative! On Thursday we practiced our numbers. We played a number matching game at the carpet and then individually completed a Number Race by rolling a dice and then writing that number in the correct column. This gave us A LOT of practice writing our numbers, and was fun to see which number would "win" the race! Free TimeOn Tuesday, at the Art table we made spring trees with loose parts and paint. We chose a specific item to be our trunk (such as noodles, straws, or paper) and then painted on leaves with bright pastel colors (using fun paintbrushes!). They turned out so beautiful! At the Science station we each received a white rose and placed it in colored water. Our teacher said that the roses would change colors depending on the water they were in. We hypothesized what color they would turn and talked about how the water travels through the different parts of the flower. At the Language table we did an alphabet activity that involved us digging through sensory bins to find items that began with a given letter. For example, if the teacher showed us a letter "B" we had to find something that began with the letter "B" (like a bird or a bee) in our bin. It was a blast! At the Art table on Wednesday, we did a flower pot art project. We cut out pots from paper, and then made the flowers by finger painting. We always love getting our hands dirty when we do crafts! At the Language table, we did a nest themed letter activity. We had to separate eggs with pictures on them into different nests by the letter that each picture began with (for example, an egg with a picture of a cookie on it, went in the "C" nest). At the Science station we simulated the water cycle, by playing with cups with holes in the bottom (like rain) and cotton balls (as clouds that soak up water). We may have gotten a bit wet, but it was one of our favorite activities from the week. On Thursday, for our Art table activity, we made cute little bees out of construction paper. We then attached a Popsicle stick to it so it can BUZZ around! At the Language station we played animal bingo. At the Science table we did a fun activity that simulated what pollination is like. We dipped "bees" in yellow paint and then spread the paint from flower to flower. It's crazy to see how far bees travel- but we are so grateful they do! Outdoor AdventuresWe looooove warm weather!!! SurveyThis week was Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Week! We enjoyed reading many Dr. Seuss books and we learned a lot about rhyming! We had many different activities, crafts, and experiments that helped us practice rhyming, allowed us to explore some exciting ideas from Dr. Seuss books, and we even got to have Green Eggs and Ham for lunch one day! We had a Wacky Wednesday, Pajama day, and we even got to watch The Cat in the Hat on our last day of this week! Overall, it was an amazing week and we learned a ton! Our fun fact for this week is that Dr Seuss loved hats, just like the Cat in the Hat! His sister once said that he must have had several hundred hats. And don't forget! "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!" -Dr. Seuss Learning and DiscoveryFor our group activity, on Tuesday, we read the book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. Then we made our prediction of if we would like green eggs and ham, just like Sam I Am. Learn more about how our lunch went in the Green Eggs and Ham section below! On Wednesday we read the Dr Seuss book Fox in Socks, and then we each made our own unique sock! We used a variety of supplies including feathers, yarn, stickers, puzzle pieces, and more! On Thursday it was pajama day, and we watched The Cat in the Hat! We thought it was super funny, and enjoyed eating delicious popcorn while we watched with our friends. We also loved showing our friends our pajamas, and sharing our favorite parts about pajamas! Outdoor PlayFree TimeOn Tuesday, at the Art table we created our own plate of green eggs and ham by tracing and cutting. At the Science station we used colored strips of paper to copy wacky hat patterns, while at the Language table we practiced our rhyming as we matched eggs that had rhyming images and words such as "cat" and "hat". At the Art table on Wednesday, we did blow straw art to create truffula trees, just like the ones we saw in Dr. Seuss's book. At the Language table, we practiced word building with Cat in the Hat. At the Science station we did goldfish graphing and counting (1 fish, 2 fish, red fish, blue fish). On Thursday, for our Art table activity, we had a fun Thing 1 Thing 2 craft! (See the Hands-On Activity at the end of this week's blog to see the instructions, and you can do it with your preschooler!) At the Language station we practiced our letters as we wrote the titles of Dr Seuss books on the matching page, and at the Science table we made a hat using plastic cups and paper, and it looked a lot like the Cat in the Hat's! We even stacked all of the cups into a giant hat which was a fun challenge! Green Eggs and HamOn Tuesday, our Culinary Arts Program here at Century served us a lunch of green eggs and ham. We also had biscuits, fruit salad, and delicious rice crispy treats for dessert! Almost all our friends tried the green eggs, and 13 of us liked them, 2 of us did not. We practiced our manners around the table as we said "Please", "Thank you", and overall enjoyed the great lunch! Candid MomentsTeacher SpotlightTeacher Skyler is in our Child Development 3 class this year. He enjoys playing football and wants to be a soldier one day.
